Overview
Matthew Anderson is an experienced litigation and trial attorney who focuses his practice on complex insurance liability matters, commercial litigation, and liability matters including construction defect actions, professional negligence, premises liability, and catastrophic personal injury and wrongful death claims. He is also highly experienced in business litigation, including fiduciary duty, trade secrets, and unfair competition claims, as well as bankruptcy matters.
Matthew’s legal practice is split equally between North and South Carolina. In addition to representing clients at the trial level in state and federal courts, he is an accomplished appellate litigator, with numerous favorable results.
Having earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia, magna cum laude, he thereafter received his J.D. degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he was a member of the South Carolina Law Review. Additionally, Matthew is an active member of the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys’ Association and the Defense Research Institute (DRI).
Prior to joining Ellis & Winters, Matthew worked as a litigation attorney for two southeast regional law firms where he represented clients in North and South Carolina state and federal courts. His practice included defending and counseling insurance carriers in policy interpretation, evaluation of coverage claims, bad faith, and extra-contractual claims. He also routinely handled declaratory judgment actions involving D&O, professional liability, environmental, and general liability policies in complex civil litigation. Matthew also handled real property litigation and bankruptcy issues.
Born and raised in Halifax County, Virginia, five miles from the North Carolina border, Matthew comes from several generations of tobacco farmers in the area. Perhaps that is the origin of his love for gardening with his wife at their Greensboro, North Carolina home. When he’s not busy with their two daughters at basketball games or dance recitals, Matthew enjoys an occasional round of golf and is working to improve his handicap.
