Ellis & Winters LLP is pleased to announce that Alex Pearce and Sean Fernandes recently earned information privacy credentials through the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP).

Alex Pearce has been designated by the IAPP as a Fellow of Information Privacy (FIP). The FIP designation signifies that Alex has demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of privacy laws, privacy program management, and essential data protection practices through his successful completion of multiple IAPP credentials. Additionally, Alex has significant work experience guiding companies through the complexities of the dynamic privacy industry.

Alex’s practice focuses on Privacy and Data Security law. He partners with organizations to provide strategic and practical guidance on matters that implicate domestic and international privacy and data security considerations.  His broad and varied experience includes counseling clients on compliance with state and federal privacy, consumer protection and breach notification laws; designing and implementing global data protection compliance strategies; negotiating cloud computing, data license and data sharing agreements, and representing clients in disputes centering on privacy and data security issues.  A frequent presenter and writer on privacy and data security issues, Alex also maintains a Certified Information Privacy Professional/United States (CIPP/US) and Certified Information Privacy Technologist (CIPT) certifications from the IAPP.

Before rejoining Ellis & Winters in 2017, Alex served as in-house Privacy Counsel for SAS, a global provider of analytics, business intelligence and data management software and services.  In that role he managed the company’s global privacy program and advised on domestic and international privacy and data security issues arising throughout the company’s operations.

Sean Fernandes has been certified as a Certified Information Privacy Professional/United States (CIPP/US).  This designation demonstrates a deep knowledge of the application of U.S. privacy laws and regulations to the private sector.  It has been described by the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) as “the global gold standard for privacy professionals,” “a key industry benchmark,” and “the world’s preeminent credential in the business of privacy.”

In his Privacy & Data Security practice, Sean has advised clients on compliance with state and federal privacy, consumer protection and breach notification laws, including HIPAA, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, and state identity theft laws.  He is also an active member of the Privacy and Data Security Committee of the ABA’s Litigation Section.
